I'm very impressed September 26, 2008 I. Banks (Berkeley, Ca) 68 out of 77 found this review helpful
So I got this bad boy in via UPS this morning and so far I am very pleased. I selected super saver shipping and got this in two days of it becoming instock after preorder phase so that was pretty cool. Anyway back to the item in hand. It definetly lives up to the hype and i'll tell you why...
It is very sexy looking for a net book and when I showed a couple neighbors they where impressed with it's look as well.
It is easy to type on for the most part. There is a slight adjustment to the placement of certain keys but I don't believe it should take more than a week to get into that comfort zone. I've used smaller netbooks and this one is a vast improvement in terms of size.
Bluetooth is awesome! I conected to my bluetooth enabled Samsung Yp2 mp3 players and performed a wireless transfer of a few movies and some music. I'm sure when it is time for me to connect to my cell phone for internet access it will work just as easily. BTW wireless N is the shiznit.
Oh yeah this thing has XP which I hate to say is just outright better than vista. I've tried to like my vista Acer laptop but it just sucks. Its dual core and all but it feels much slower than this ASUS.
Oh yeah it is whisper quite and does not get hot at all. Hardly even qualifies as warm after running Rhapsody, and having several tabs on Opera open at once.
But I will admit that while the screen is super bright and unreflective the picture was not as sharp as I invisioned. I mean it is still pretty crisp, but not quiet what I expected (although my expectations were through the roof after reading reviews of the 80gb model.)
Hope this little review of mine helps any buyers out there narrow down there choices. Holla.
ASUS Eee PC 1000H 160GB September 28, 2008 Ricardo (Eastern PA) 26 out of 27 found this review helpful
The 1000H arrived on 9/24/08. It worked just fine out of the box after going through the setup. The display is very bright, I had to set the brightness 2/3 of the way down.
I did manage to "scrooch" XP trying to install Trend Micro 2007 and I had to do a restore using the ASUS restore DVD with a Lite-On DX-8A1H external USB CD/DVD drive. This took 15 minutes.
ASUS includes a 90-day trial version of Eset Nod32 anti-virus. I am using this and the Windows Firewall. There is minimal junk-ware pre-installed and what there is can be easily removed if you don't activate it first.
The keyboard is very useable and there is almost no flex in it. I didn't buy the Eee PC to write an encyclopedia, I bought it for when we travel to read email, etc. The touchpad operation/sensitivity can be improved by going into the hardware setup and setting the touchpad sampling rate to 20, the minimum value.
The wireless b/g/n connection works well with my Linksys WRT54G2 router and I can see and logon to several neighbors' networks as well.
I haven't tested the battery run-time but the battery meter with a wireless connection and the Bluetooth turned off indicates at least 5 hours after a full charge.
The included neoprene sleeve is excellent, I intend to carry the Eee PC in the sleeve inside an 11" boarding bag when we travel.
Giant Killer October 21, 2008 The tester (Fort Dodge, IA USA) 16 out of 16 found this review helpful
This ASUS 1000H-A is amazing, fast & quiet. I bought it mostly for travel, but I've been using it for photo editing and other intense computing applications. This little thing performs just as fast as my 17" HP laptop. This is indeed a giant killer. The sound is awesome: I set it to headphone in the speakers setup and the speakers plays much louder than the default 2 speaker stereo setup. The LCD is brighter & crisper than both my Averatec and HP laptops. This is the ideal, perfect netbook: does everthing well! I installed the Delome Street Atlas USA With GPS software and it works better than any of those high priced GPS ONLY little screen gizmos that cost more than this Asus. Fast and accurate and small enough for the dash or console. Tip: The Delome Street Atlas USA is much better than microsoft street atlas (I have both). I also use it as a Photo Screen for my Canon DSLR camera. Works perfect with the Canon remote setup: 10" review instead of the tiny Camera LCD display. This Asus 1000H-A is the BOMB!
On the con side: jus' one - I hate where they put the right shift key, need some getting use to. Other than that, the key board, battery life, LCD, speakers are awesome. And the build quality and style: ELEGANT!
Well, you can tell, I highly recommend this netbook, top of its class.
If you can find the 1000H buy that instead of the 1000HA which lacks the bluetooth and wireless N but cost about $40-$50 dollars less, but If you don't need bluetooth or wireless N then get the 1000HA. Remember Asus invented the netbook, the others are copies! Nuff said!
Great product October 9, 2008 M. Murphy 13 out of 13 found this review helpful
This laptop has turned out to be a real joy. I am a student, who needed a small laptop as a replacement for my 17 inch laptop which is just far too big for class. I'm so impressed! This laptop is beautiful and runs really great. I purchased 2 gigs of ram and installed it before I even turned it on, so I'm not sure how it runs on 1gb. Screen is nice, the keyboard is fairly easy to type on. (even with my large hands at 6'3") The only complaint is the mouse is a little bit harder to get used to. I often touch it accidentally and it will move the cursor to another location, but nothing I can't get used to, and it's something you have to deal with when you have a laptop this small. Great product, well worth the 500 bucks! It has everything, even bluetooth. Just no CD drive. I give this product an A- a must buy for the price. You won't be disappointed.
Near perfection October 28, 2008 Travis Dockweiler (kalamazoo, mi USA) 15 out of 16 found this review helpful
First off, let me say that I skipped out on all of these netbooks for over a year. The reason is that I don't like the idea of a 8.9" screen, extremely small SSD drives and a keyboard that's hard to type on.
One day I was at a local store and saw the 1000HD for sale. It's cheaper and a bit different and lacking in features I needed. I did however like that unit so much that I upgraded to this.
I first booted up the computer and out of the box it felt a little slow. I'm not sure of the reason for this. To uninstall Staroffice it took me nearly 10 minutes! I made sure to delete any useless items on the computer that I would not need. The anti-virus software was also removed and AVG free replaced it.
The computer is fast enough for me, but it is nearly worthless for any type of video encoding. That's to be expected though. I did a test of a 2 hour movie and it would have taken 5 hours. That's not even an H.264 encode. Mp3 encoding should be perfectly fine at least.
Movie playback is perfectly fine. I had no problem playing back 640x480 movies full screen that were encoded in H.264 at 2000-2500kbps. Some of them I was even able to play while backing up the hard drive to USB.
The built in speakers are decent, but pretty much all built in speakers in computers under $1000 are not that good. I'd always prefer to just use headphones.
Wi-fi on this is fast. I can browse the internet and max out my connection speed with no problem of course. I could not do that on the 1000HD somehow, yet Wireless-G should handle that. This has Wireless-N.
I don't normally use bluetooth, but I connectd up a bluetooth Apple Wireless keyboard to this and it would not pair no matter what. Only until I upgraded the drivers would it work, and it was still a pain. Hated that keyboard so much that I switched to something else.
One other negative is that the trackpad buttons are extremely stiff. This would probably be so that it's lasts ,but it's annoying. Instead, i'm using the VX evolution from Logitech and it seems to be perfect with this. Simply tapping the touchpad is an alternative, but that doesn't work for everything (like dragging and dropping).
Currently the netbook's disply is off and the video is being sent to a 22" LCD at full native resolution. 1680x1050. No clone only mode here, but that is an option though. So is extendd desktop mode.
The next minor problem I had is that I attached a wireless keyboard/mouse set to the right usb ports and it was not detected. Very strange. I connected it to the left one and it was ok. I tested my right USB ports with a flash drive and it worked ok.
One other tiny problem is that the right shift key is in a very bad spot. It's to the right of the up arrow key.
I am liking this 1000H so much that I even upgraded it to a 7200rpm drive and 2gb of ram. The drive is perfectly fine and does not get that hot and doesn't seem to use any more power.
Another major plus with this over other netbooks is that the hard drive and ram are extremely easy to upgrade. It took me less than 5 minutes to replace both.
To be honest, one of the main reasons I purchased this, was for portable mp3s and movies and to save electricity. This thing is amazing when it comes to power usage. With a full load/100% cpu usage and "Full Performance Mode", this thing would NOT go over 18 watts!
When just browsing the web at 40% brightness and power saving mode, it used only 13 watts! I tested it with a power meter called "Kill-A-Watt". With 0 brightness, "Power Saving Mode" and Bluetooth and Wi-Fi off, this thing reporte only 10 watts being used! 10 watts! That's like a CFL Lightbulb! Amazing. Remember, this is even with a 7200rpm drive. The 0 brightness setting is dim, but it's not that bad. Turning it up to 30% sends it up to 13s watt or so if i remember.
With Blue-tooth off, 40% brightness and "Power Savings" mode, the battery will last 6 1/2 hours. Maybe 7, but I doubt it. Not sure how Asus did that.
The hard drive in this system out of the box is pretty fast unlike the one in my Macbook Pro and HP Laptops. It uses a Seagate Momentus. They didn't skimp on quality and put in the cheapest generic drive they could find. I'm not a fan of Seagate though, but it is a decent drive. My new 7200rpm WD Scorpio has a read speed on this of about 61mb/sec. The old one was about 15mb/sec less if I remeber right.
I haven't used the webcam yet, so I have no clue about that. USB and LAN speed seem normal too. My WD exteral drive read at 35mb/sec constantly. Found that strange. That's good for USB though. Most of my other USB devices are much slower.
One nice thing about this netbook is that it boots VERY fast! I haven't timed it, but it feels like 30 seconds or so. SSD drives are often faster, but some of the MLC versions have slow write speeds. I'm so tempted to install one of those new Intel SSD drives in this! That'd be a bit overkill though since they're $250 more than this thing.
I mentioned the keyboard and how the shift key is in a bad spot. The keyboard itself, other than that is easy to type on.
I did play a few games on it, but it was not purchased for that. I loaded Quake 3 and of course it ran VERY fast. Of course that's a very old game. Crysis at 1600x120 ran at 120fps with everything set to HIGH. Ok, i'm kidding. It'd probably get 2fps (frames per second) if it even ran. I still have Half Life 2 in the box to install, maybe i'll try that. After that I may dual boot this with Ubuntu Linux if I can. Perhaps put it on an external hard drive and see how it goes.
Anyway, this netbook is perfect for me. No major problems at all so far. Hopefully it stays that way!
